Der Brief im Treppenhaus: a complete German short story

A complete story

Read, understand, use again

How can you use this story to practise German?

Mara finds a letter addressed to a former resident of her building. The story follows her decision, the meeting and what changes afterwards. Read all three parts before answering the question: the ending is available without signing up.

Start by following the characters and events. Look up the words that block your understanding, then return to the story. The question checks why Frau Winter comes to Mara’s flat; the explained answer quotes the clue in the text.

B1 is a suggested reading level for this text, not an assessment of your personal level. In the app, the words you choose can be saved with their sentences and revisited in vocabulary review sessions.

Questions about this exercise and Lira

Is the whole story available without an account?

Yes. All three parts, the ending and the explained answer are on this page. You do not need to create an account to find out what happens.

Does the translation replace the German text?

No. The reader lets you look up a word or expression, then return to the German passage. The story keeps its original text and order.

Is this story suitable for A1 learners?

The suggested reading level is B1. An A1 beginner may meet too many unfamiliar words and structures; a simpler text would be a better starting point.
